12 Hauraki Road - Robyn Toomath

Nine years ago this was steep, bare clay. We planted like crazy and now I spend all my time hacking things back. It was designed as a productive garden and in addition to vegetables I grow olives, figs, grapes, lemons, limes, mandarins, oranges, persimmons, feijoas, plums and apples - mostly for the birds.

48 Crescent Road East Extension - Karen Williams - Jardin des Fleurs

There are three main sections to my garden where paths take you into, under, and around the house. Just one year ago the flower garden was just lawn and weeds. With the encouragement and help of my wonderful friend Kay, my dream became a reality filled with all the things I love - herbs, roses, hydrangeas, dahlias, gardenia and magnolias. The bromeliad garden is to the left of the house.

Now more than 11 years on, it is a very beautiful and also productive garden. We have 32 species of fruit and berry plants with a year round bountiful vege garden.

We’ve been planting for the birds, butterflies and bees as well as developing a good size vegetable garden.

25C Calais Terrace - Lyndell Shannon

A garden is never finished. Five years into what I thought was a ten-year project, my garden’s shape is finally becoming clear. What was a weed-infested steep hillside is developing into a uniquely Waiheke garden that takes its inspiration from the surrounding landscape, and combines bold simple lines and complex planting. Sweeping beds of shrubs, perennials, grasses and roses surround a contemporary house.

Garden 10

70 Margaret Reeve Lane - Janet and Gordon Cuthbert

Our journey began here 20 years ago when we first found the property and planted olive trees. Ten years ago we built the house and retired and have been planning and planting ever since. A row of pin oaks and liquid ambers screen us from the road and provide Autumn colour, with daffodils planted underneath. Hedges of griselinia, hibiscus, hornbeam and camelia sinensis (teabush) create structure and some wind protection.
